Culinary delights at Winterlicious 2014

Toronto is now in the midst of one its most beloved festivals. Winterlicious is offering up some of Toronto’s best and most diverse culinary treats.

The winter and summer “licious” festivals were created in 2003 by the City of Toronto, as an initiative to promote the culturally diverse culinary scene in Toronto, pump up the local restaurant economy, to bring people together to explore the city and to celebrate great food.

zeeBigBang spoke with Eirine Papaioannou, an Event Support Supervisor, who has been working on the festivals with the city since the project’s inception. “Toronto has an incredible culinary industry. We have such great and innovative chefs, and we wanted to profile them, and bring the city together and really let people try new things and explore,” explains Eirine.

The festival has done more than highlight the vastly multicultural palette the Toronto has. Over 4.3 millions meals have been served through the festival, and it has pumped $192 million into the economy.

This year’s festival boasts the highest number of participants yet, with over 200 restaurants joining in on the culinary celebration.

Culinary events, such as hands on cooking workshops, chef challenges, and food and fashion events are also being held though out the week.

“I think my favourite part of Winterlicious is being able to comb through the menus, and trying new foods,” adds Eirine. “Some of the chefs make dishes that are exclusively for the festival. And these are real artists at work, and they make some amazing creations. So it’s a really great way to enjoy some delicious food and try something new. Plus you can explore a neighbourhood of the city you haven’t been to before, so all in all it’s a great way for Toronto to celebrate and come together.”
