Vikalinka Food Blog: many countries, one inspiration

Julia Frey is Vikalinka, the famous food blogger who gets the world drooling with her pictures and recipes every day.

“I was born and raised in Russia. I have since lived in the United States, Canada, Philippines and England and have done much traveling.  My cooking and eating style are naturally influenced by many cultures. My food choices reflect who I am and what I love. I don’t cook recipes from all over the world because I want to appear cross-cultural or trendy. I love fusion cuisine which often happens in the Vikalinka kitchen,” Julia explains to zeeBigBang.

All her life Julia has been surrounded by women who loved to cook and knew how to do it well. “Both of my grandmothers and my mother were excellent cooks and always involved me in the process. It was usually our quality time together because my mom worked and cooking together after work was our hang-out time,” she says.

Julia now lives in England and notes that the biggest difference between cooking in North America and the UK is the ingredients. “I live off the land and use the food that is available. In North America, we used to eat a lot of Asian and Mexican inspired meals. Now I tend to cook more European style dishes – Italian, French, Spanish and of course, British,” she explains.

Julia says that her Vikalinka blog is not just about cooking. It’s also about presentation. Her pictures show a homemade style giving her fans a nice and cozy feeling.

“Everything is photographed in my house. I’ve collected a huge amount of props, thanks to numerous vintage and antique markets in London, that help create the atmosphere,” she says.

One of the most popular posts on Vikalinka is her Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry.  It’s the post that she is most proud of. “Curries are well loved by our family and I was getting requests to post some recipes. I was delaying it because some of the tastiest foods are not the most photogenic. When I finally gathered enough courage to do so, it really paid off. I love the photos. I got a lot of positive feedback from my readers and the recipe got featured on Patak’s Canada as well as on a number of other websites.” Julia says.

“Food has an incredible ability to gather people together. Writing is just an outlet to express the way our life happens.” Julia explains.
